Build log #3: the week the queue learned what it hadn't filmed
Last week the queue started posting by itself. This week it got opinionated — it started telling me what I hadn’t shot, and it started deleting the wrong things until I made it stop. Most of the work lived in C.R.E.A.T.O.R., with a big side quest into recording the studio itself.
The board that knows what’s never been filmed
The headline is a coverage board for the content engine — but not the vanity kind. It started as “how many posts per platform, gaps included,” then grew teeth: coverage by app × type, a grid that literally names which apps have never been in front of a camera. You can’t argue with a cell that says zero.
Along the way it got honest about itself instead of shrugging: the board used to print ? when it didn’t know something, and now it explains itself. I also did an audit pass so shoots show visible outcomes, coverage is attributed, and notes actually render instead of quietly vanishing. And you can now classify a post without opening the editor — because forcing a full edit just to tag something as “Regular post” (the type for content that shows no app) was friction I’d invented for myself.
One small naming fix I’m fond of: the engine used to nag me to tag the app I fixed — except it kept pointing at the tool I used, not the app. Now it warns correctly. If the coverage math is wrong at the source, the whole board lies.
Recording the studio, on camera
The scarier build: getting my music/render setup to capture itself. Two commits carry it — REAPER auto-mix P1, which takes MPC stems all the way to a mixed session and render, and REAPER ghost sessions on camera, a P2 capture rig so the process is filmable, not just audible. This is the machinery behind actually having footage to feed that coverage board instead of staring at empty cells.
Creator also stopped flattening my work: still-image cuts now exist, and I killed loudnorm crushing the beat — the normalizer was politely erasing the dynamics I’d just mixed in. Caption cuts landed too, for the platforms where a raw screenshot doesn’t belong. And a font fix that sounds petty but wasn’t: burned-in labels now use Anton, because Segoe read as PowerPoint.
The relay ate my footage (and other confessions)
The honest cleanup section, as always:
- The relay was deleting the phone’s video minutes after Mark posted. Post succeeds, source disappears — exactly the kind of “it worked, so I threw it away” bug that eats originals. Fixed.
- Save reported nothing because the confirmation toast was rendering behind the sheet. It had been working; I just couldn’t see it say so.
- Approve could fail silently — so every write now reports, extending last week’s “the screen can’t go quiet” rule into the publish path.
- App Check went in for Kaizen, deliberately in observe mode first — you watch what enforcement would block before you flip it on and lock yourself out.
- The fleet timeline got a backfill: 20 empty days reconstructed straight from git history, so the record matches the work.
The site got a real pass too — the build log is on the homepage now instead of a lonely nav link, share cards are branded per-post, and dangling og tags on /apps, /services and /support stopped rendering sad previews.
What’s next
The board has named the gaps; now the shoot schedule has to close them. Feed the empty cells, let the render farm and the REAPER rig do the tedious part, and see the grid go dark-to-filled. The daily version still lives at Rndm Life Things.
